Kinja'd!!!

I’m flying to Newark on Wednesday and need to get into the city to my hotel (and back to the airport a few days later) . Any recommendations? I’ve used Super Shuttle i n the past with mixed results. Uber is $60, never done that before.

You've never ubered before?

How much is Super Shuttle? Personally, I’d uber or lyft, unless super shuttle is significantly cheaper.

Super Shuttle is about $20, but you definitely get what you pay for.

The airtrain will be faster/cheaper if you arrive during rush hour. Also highly depends where you’re going in the city. If it’s close to Penn Station def air train.

If you’re ok with spending the extra money, then I’d go for an uber.

huh.  Uber/Lyft don’t currently exist in BC for a few really dumb reasons, but I’ve taken it in other Canadian/US cities.  I’d uber it.

There should be a train/light rail. That’s what I use when going to San Francisco and Portland OR. It usually works great, has a predictable schedule and is really inexpensive compared to Uber/Lyft. You just have to put up with the odor of stale piss and commuter crunches.

Google says my hotel is a six minute walk from Penn Station. Please tell me more about this train....

TorqueToYield just mentioned the train. It looks like my hotel is a six minute walk from Penn Station, so this might be just the way to do it. Reliable and regular schedule.

I’ve always taken the Air Train ( https://www.newarkairport.com/to-from-airport/air-train ), but that really depends on where you need to go in the city.

If Uber isn’t 40$ better than the shuttle, take the shuttle, save 10 and treat yourself with the remaining 30?

Another Oppo just recommended that. My hotel is very close to Penn Station , so I think I’ll go that route.

I only use Uber/Lyft when there is no other option. They work well but when you get into the $60 range for a ride I think that is borderline robbery.

There is no amount of money someone could pay *me* to take SuperShuttle. Take the train.

FWIW, a lot of cities have “fixed cab fares” to common destinations, and every one of them I’ve seen undercuts Uber/Lyft pretty easily. Probably more than the train, but much more convenient to hop in a cab if they have anything like that. I believe the cities regulate these, they’re not voluntary by the cab companies.

The AirTrain will take you from any of the three terminals at EWR with the airport’s station on the Northeast Corridor. From there you would take an NJTransit train straight into Penn Station. There are electronic ticket kiosks for both the AirTrain and NJTransit at the stations .

That definitely sounds like the best way to go. I’ll hit the web and figure it out. Thanks.

https://www.newarkairport.com/to-from-airport/air-train

It connects to NJ Transit Coast line or Northeast Corridor line. Either of those lines will bring you to NY Penn and should leave every 20 or 30 min as long as it’s not late at night or too early in the morning.

NJ Transit will have info on both lines.

If you can walk from NY Penn to your hotel that sounds pretty easy.

Here’s the schedule for the NJT trains on Wednesday , and the Port Authority’s official AirTrain info page .

Thanks. I’ve been looking at that site. I’m not a public transportation newb, but I also don’t use it often. I imagine I can go to the kiosk and get a ticket for PS pretty easily. There should also be a human being to talk to. This is definitely the way I’ll make the trip.

There will be ticket kiosks. You can even pay cash on the train to the conductor but they charge an extra fee.

Just don’t confuse Newark Penn Station with NY Penn station. With accents and bad speakers too many people make that mistake. And whoever put 2 stations with nearly the same name a few stops from each other should be fired.

Also, I believe coming back from NYC not all trains stop at the airport, there’ll be a little airplane icon next to the trains that do.

As others suggested, take the train.

If you don’t like trains, the Uber helicopter for $195 is probably a better value than sitting in a rideshare car for $60+tip

Just take the train. It’s exceedingly easy, especially in that direction since all NJ transit trains going into the city will go to Penn Station. I’ve also done a bus, but I think the train is easier and cheaper, as suming they are running on schedule. And from Penn Station there are lots of subway lines to get you to wherever it is in the city you need to go.

Ah yeah. Flying into EWR to get to NYC is a drag. Sure, a Newark ticket is cheaper, but ...that whole transpo thing. Myself a Snooty Manhattanite, this is out of the question , however:

Airtan: T he train. NJ Transit to Amtrak direct to Penn Station. Platforms, tunnels, train changes. If you have a lot of luggage this is a tough one. Leave the D ouble Bass at home. $13.00

You tried SuperShuttle, not so good, amiright?

There are express busses that g o to Penn Station from EWR for $16. I would personally go this way. Get on the bus, no stairs, no humping around your bags, short walk to the hotel is the hardest it’s going to get. Relax. From your window e njoy the amazing collection of rusting bridges NJ has to offer.

It’s the way to go unless you are travelling on someone else’s dime. I’ve also taken a bus, but I really don’t see any advantage in that over taking the train. Costs about the same, and you get stuck in traffic.

Only thing to watch for is how frequently the trains are running. Morning and e vening are fine, but trains will be few and far between late at night, and sometimes there’s a weird midday lull where there might be a longer wait. Normally it’s a much better option than going by road, even if you have to wait.

Hadn’t heard about the express bus, and the extra fare would be well worth it. My hotel is just 6 minutes walk from Penn.

No double bass on this trip. That’s not my particular idiom, anyway.

Thanks.

I arrive (sched) at 1:30, so that shouldn’t be an issue. JeepThatLeaks spoke highly of the express buss to Penn. It’s more expensive, but might be easier.

I didn’t buy the ticket, so I can’t be choosy. There was a direct from AUS to JFK, but I don’t mind the two hours in ATL. You know me, I like airplanes, and airports.

I did Super Shuttle in DEN about 15 years ago (went out for the principal trumpet audition, played like shit for 5 minutes, got super drunk, came home the next day). Aside from an insanely early pickup time while I was still rather drunk, Super Shuttle was fine. There were many, many bad reviews on the EWR shuttle, but then again, most people only review when they have something to kvetch about.

I remember riding into the city many, many years ago, and I was amazed at the number of derelict, rusty, stripped cars alongside the road.

Thanks.

Looks like the express bus only goes to Grand Central. That’s too far of a walk. Bryant Park is a bit better, Port Authority is about the same distance as Penn. I have been through the PA. What a germ gem of humanity that place is....

Newark Airport Express newarkairportexpress.com [bus] Never tried them, but again, they go right to the PA. I think the NJ Trans does too. First stop? Anyway, it’s all good. Not as many interesting auto/truck carcasses as in the 90's tho. I do love that Post  Industrial Revlol ution ruined landscape just outside the tunnel.
